Three killed, 113 missing in landslide after heavy rain in Japan

At least three people were found dead and more than 100 went missing torrential rain Landslides began in the central Japanese city of Atami over the weekend, media reported on Monday.

The Kyodo news agency said one death was confirmed, bringing the death toll to 113, with 113 people still missing in the seaside town 90 km (60 mi) southwest of Tokyo. Homes on Saturday are missing, after floods, landslides and cascading mud collapsed and left half-submerged.

Reminds me of torrential rains and landslides natural disasters – including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis – that plagued Japan, where the capital Tokyo is set to host the Summer Olympics starting this month.

The landslide occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in Atami, which is home to hot spring resorts and sits on a steep slope in a bay. Local media said water, mud and debris are believed to have gone into the sea for about two kilometers along the river.
