Oakmont, Pa.: Michael Thorbjrnsson made five consecutive birdies to win his first match and needed another big comeback in the second round of the US Amateur that faced more delays on Thursday.
Play was suspended for the second time due to a storm in the field before the second round of 16 at Oakmont ended only three matches. The first delay was just under an hour.
Thorbjrnsen, a former US Junior Amateur champ, was down 3 with six holes to play against William Hot when the Stanford sophomore ran away from five consecutive birdies.
It started with an 18-foot birdie put on the 13th hole. He won the next two wedges in about 5 feet, and then hit a 4-iron to 3 feet on the par-3 16th. Thorbjornsen ended matches 2 and 1, with a bunker shot hitting the reachable par-4 pin in the 17th position and settling 8 feet away.
But the 19-year-old from Massachusetts was in trouble late in the second round against Nick Gebrelcic, who had birdies in the 15th and 16th holes before storming. When the round was to resume on Friday morning, Gebrelsik was up 2 with two holes.
At least Thorbjörsen got to the second round.
Mark Goetz, the medalist who qualified to be the No. 1 seed for the match, grew up nearly 40 miles away and when he was 3 with four holes to play, he had plenty to cheer about. .
David Nyfgal of Sweden then reversed the match by winning the next four holes, his only birdie at No. 18 for 1 win.
Nyfgall qualified for last place in match play only by winning a 12-way playoff. When play was halted, Nyfgall was tied for 20 holes with Florida star Ricky Castillo.
Eddie Lai defeated second seed Brian Ma, 4 and 2. No. 4 seed Travis Vick defeated Preston Somerhays, 4 and 2.
The plan was to restart the second round on Friday. The original schedule was for the second and third rounds to be played on Thursday, with the quarter-finals on Friday.
