The Chandni Chowk area of Delhi offers a wide variety of food items and is known as a popular haven for food lovers. Chandni Chowk is also home to several bakeries that still make bread, cookies, rusks and biscuits in traditional ways. Situated on Chhatta Lal Mian Road near Delhi Gate area, there is a bakery which has been serving the customers since decades. New Elahi Bakery was started in 1951 and is serving a variety of cookies, biscuits and breads.
Nowadays people prefer to opt for new breakfast options like oats, muesli, cornflakes and poha. But, on the other hand, New Elahi Bakery has managed to retain its customers with an old school breakfast of rusks, fans and breads. The traditional breakfast of rusk, bread and fan with tea is popular in Delhi.
The bakery is now run by two brothers, Mohammad Tauseef and Mohammad Arif. New Elahi Bakery was started by his grandfather in 1951. The brothers claim that the process they use gives their biscuits a distinct taste. He said that a mixture of sugar, maida (maida) and salmonella forms the base of the biscuits.
The bakery is famous for its rusks, sweet breads, round rusks and special handmade biscuits. The shop is also offering dry fruit roti during Ramzan. Apart from the dry fruits which give it a distinct crunchy taste, special bread also has many other ingredients that make it special. Some of the ingredients include coconut, sesame, cherry and chironji seeds.
Earlier all the items available in the shop were traditionally prepared using wood ovens. However, the owner later installed an electric oven which he now uses to make a wide variety of biscuits and cookies. From coconut biscuits, cumin biscuits to cashew and almond biscuits, New Alhai Bakery’s menu offers an extensive choice for all visitors to the shop.
