Uttarakhand, in seismic zones 4 and 5, faces high earthquake risk. Geologist Dr Ajay Paul suggests these measures so that we can brace ourselves for a major quake in future

The Himalayan state of Uttarakhand has been placed in seismic zone-4 and 5 indicating a high risk of earthquakes. In 1991 and 1992, Uttarkashi and Chamoli experienced major earthquakes. Recently, mild earthquakes in Dehradun and surrounding areas have raised concerns among residents. Although no major earthquake has occurred in Uttarakhand for a long time, frequent mild tremors have alarmed geologists.

Speaking to News18 Local, Dr Ajay Paul, former geologist of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology shared why this Himalayan state faces the risk of major earthquakes.

Dr Paul explained that the Earth’s surface consists of multiple plates. The Himalayas were formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates. Currently, the Indian plate is gradually sliding beneath the Eurasian plate, leading to energy accumulation. The rocks below the surface cannot store this energy, causing them to break. This rapid release of energy beneath the surface results in an earthquake.

Dr Ajay Paul stated that science has not yet advanced enough to accurately predict earthquakes, but geologists are actively researching in this field. Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand lie on land where energy accumulation occurs, which could be released as an earthquake at any time.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2, 3, or 4 have been occurring in Uttarakhand. Dr Ajay Paul noted that the mild earthquake which was recently felt in Dehradun serves as a warning for people and authorities to remain vigilant and prepared.

Dr Ajay Paul suggests that people will have to be made aware through mock drills so that there is no loss of life and property in an earthquake. Also, earthquake resistant houses should be built on the lines of Japan. People should maintain peace when an earthquake occurs.

Paul explained that earthquakes frequently occur in many areas due to the natural release of energy below the Earth’s surface and the movement of tectonic plates. He said that while earthquakes are a natural phenomenon, we can take various measures to mitigate their impact.
