Prayagraj: This DiwaliWhen your home is illuminated with designer and colorful diyas, idols and flower pots (Gamla), it will bring happiness not only to you and your family but to the lives of more than 20 women of Shankargarh Block.
A group of 22 women belonging to three Self Help Groups (SHGs) are making designer and colored diyas (earthen pots), vases and sculptures with the help of cow dung and machines. The women have prepared decorative items using the dung of over 2,500 cows currently sheltering at Kanha Gaushala in Janwa village of Shankargarh block in Trans-Yamuna pocket of Prayagraj district.
The women volunteers aim to make around one lakh diyas and 50,000 vases of three different sizes with the help of machines before Diwali. District Manager (National Rural Livelihood Mission) Amit Shukla told TOI, “More than 30 women belonging to three self-help groups are shaping designer diyas and flower pots with the help of cow dung.” He said that this time we have brought a special machine for shaping diyas and vases in Kanha Gaushala of Shankargarh block.
He further added, “The cow dung of more than 2,500 cows sheltered in Kanha Gaushala will be used by these volunteers and they will make good profits. There is a growing demand for traditional diyas and pots made of cow dung from different parts of the state.
In addition, women belonging to other self-help groups are shaping traditional and designer diyas and idols and candles of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi in Bahadurpur and Bahria blocks. Apart from this, candles were also manufactured in Meja block ahead of Diwali.
Interestingly, traders associated with various trade unions have already placed orders for diyas and idols made of cow dung and women volunteers are ready to make more if there is more demand from other states.
Meanwhile, Prayag Vyapar Mandal president Vijay Arora told TOI, “We have decided to promote only indigenous products for the festival of lights. Only indigenous lights and indigenous decorative items will be sold in the markets of Prayagraj and surrounding districts. These diyas, idols, candles and flower pots will be sold in the markets and makeshift stalls set up in several areas of the district.
