Under the Manuscript Project, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) preserves palm leaf scripts for a period of 500 years, where the scriptures are preserved in lockers in bunker-type-constructions.

Palmistry, the treasure trove of Indian culture and heritage goes through a carefully painstaking process of preservation. The Sanskrit University at Tirupati by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which houses a collection of over 5,500 scriptures, is a case in point.

The process involves three steps and helps preserve them for years without causing any damage. Let’s have a look here-

For this each leaf is cleaned with a dry brush and natural spirit is applied on it to ensure that there is no dust particle left on it.

🔺 then Specific oils are applied to the leaves, where they are preserved for the maximum amount of time due to the moisture derived from the oils.

🔺After this the palm leaves are numbered and later they are scanned with the latest scanning machine for handwriting.

TTD has added new buildings under the Manuscript Project to preserve palm leaf scripts for a period of 500 years, where the scriptures are preserved in lockers in bunker-type-constructions.

According to officials concerned, out of 5,500 scriptures brought from the Archaeological Department, 3,370 palm-leaf texts have been scanned so far.

Officials said that there are about 2,11,313 palm leaves in the above scriptures.

TTD is taking steps to complete the scanning of remaining scriptures within two months by allotting staff with adequate technical support.

TTD also proposed to publish books with translated works of above mentioned palm scriptures where it will pave the way for students who want to pursue PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in near future.

The prestigious project under the supervision of Veda Vishwavidyalayam and TTD in association with Sanatana Jeevan Trust has got nationwide recognition, where the scriptures are classified subject wise and numbers are given to preserve them.

The names of the donors will be mentioned on the lockers in which the palm leaves will be preserved and special care has been taken by the concerned authorities to maintain the room temperature between 18 to 24 degrees to maintain the moisture of the leaves.
