MUMBAI: As the Covid-19 cases in the state’s current hotspot Kolhapur, Maharashtra’s Public Health Minister once again on Sunday Rajesh Tope Said that experts have warned that the coming third wave could be bigger than the second, in which 6 million people could be infected.
Tope, who is currently in Jalna, said this could increase the requirement of medical oxygen from 2,000 MT to 4,000 MT. He said overcrowding should be avoided and no permission should be given for public events. In Maharashtra, the first wave affected 20 lakh people while the second wave affected 40 lakh people. “Experts fear that the third wave may infect 60 lakh, so we should be ready to test it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the state recorded 9,000 cases and 180 deaths on Sunday, after the daily Covid-19 tally hovered between 7,000 and 8,500 for the past 10 days. Maharashtra has so far reported 62.14 lakh cases and 1.27 lakh deaths.
In Kolhapur circle, the cases rose to 3,662, while the deaths also rose to 57 on Sunday.
