These diet and lifestyle changes can protect your heart

A heart attack usually occurs when a clot blocks the flow of blood to the heart. A heart attack requires immediate medical attention, and if more time goes by without treatment, it causes more damage to the heart muscle. Symptoms of heart disease can usually be silent or may be mistaken for something else. While regular checkups help one keep track of their heart health, it is equally important that you pay attention to your lifestyle choices – especially diet and fitness.

Smoking not only adversely affects the heart but also other parts of the body. Quitting cigarettes can reduce the risk of heart attack. According to the AHA, quitting smoking cuts the risk in about half.

Regular exercise can lower your chances of getting heart disease. Keeping an active routine also has a positive effect on your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight, energy and mood. If you are unwell, or are going through some sort of illness, high-intensity exercise may not be suitable for you. Consult a doctor before starting an exercise routine.
