La Palma, Spain: a month later Cumbre Vieja Volcano Explosion on Spanish island Palm Spewing red-hot lava and ash, Culberta Cruz, her husband and their dog are living in a small caravan in a parking lot and see no end to the ordeal.
“I am tired, very tired … But who are we to fight against nature?” The 56-year-old hospital kitchen worker said sitting on an unfolded camping chair.
Her husband, banana grower Tono Gonzalez, along with their French bulldog, were pulling power cables and water hoses to connect to the vehicle. The couple has been living in a small camping car for a month, brushing constantly volcanic ash by vehicle.
Cruz said, “One day it’s exploding there, another here a vent opens, it’s just anguish and living in fear, waiting and praying for it.” “And it is very sad for those who lost their home.”
Streams of red-hot lava have engulfed some 800 hectares (2000 acres) of land, destroying nearly 2,000 buildings and many banana plantations since the eruption began on 19 September. More than 6,000 people have had to leave their homes.
Volcanologists have said they cannot predict how long the volcano will continue to eject molten magma.

“We don’t know when it will stop, that’s the problem. It’s nature and we have to deal with it, it’s bigger than us,” Gonzalez said.
Added Cruz: “The future is to try to remove (stuff) we have and wait for it to end, then return to the life we had before, even if it’s more difficult.”
