He said, “I have bought kanwar, its decorative items and other puja material worth Rs 3 lakh from a trader in Varanasi, but the trader has now refused to take back the material.”
He further said that there are about 500 families in the district who are doing business of selling Kanwar travel related goods for the last four-five decades and all of them are facing financial loss due to the pandemic for the last two years.
“We used to make a profit of Rs 40,000 to 50,000 during every Shravan month by selling kanwars, utensils of various shapes and sizes for carrying holy water, garlands, bells and special kanwar dress. But this year and last year have been very difficult for us.
There will be no kanwariyas at the ghats in the month of Shravan starting July 25 and a section of devotees will be seen offering prayers at local temples. Devotees who offer prayers in temples do not buy Kanwar travel related items.
Rajesh, another Kanwar material seller, said, “The state government should also understand our grievances and problems, and offer us financial assistance. We are sellers registered with the government and pay taxes every year for setting up our shops. The cancellation of Kanwar Yatra has affected our business to a great extent.
Several families selling kanwar goods said that the ban on kanwar yatra is undoubtedly a big challenge for them, as they will have to dispose of all the puja material.
