Earlier on September 5, the retail prices of both petrol and diesel fuel were cut by 13-15 paise per liter. According to the price notification by state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs), petrol remained stable at Rs 109.19 per liter and diesel at Rs 88.62 per liter on Wednesday. In Mumbai, both the major auto fuel rates saw a similar trend, with petrol prices remaining stable and retailing at Rs 107.26 per litre. Notably, the capital of Maharashtra became the first metro in the country where petrol was sold for more than Rs 100 per litre. Diesel also remained the same and sold at Rs 96.19 per liter in the economic hub of the country.
Both the fuel rates remain unchanged in Kolkata as well, where a liter of petrol and diesel was sold at Rs 101.62 and Rs 91.71 respectively.
In Chennai too, a liter of petrol was priced at Rs 98.96 per liter, while the price of diesel remained unchanged at Rs 93.26 per liter in the Tamil Nadu capital.
Meanwhile, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is scheduled to meet in Lucknow on September 17. According to reports, the Almighty Council may consider bringing petrol, diesel and other related petroleum products under the purview of GST. However, the move may require major compromises by both the central and state governments, as it will reduce the revenue earned from taxing both the fuels.

Meanwhile, crude oil prices rose in the international markets on Wednesday. Industry data indicating a larger than expected fall in crude stocks in the United States, and hopes that demand will improve as vaccine roll-outs widen, supported the market, Reuters reported.
Brent crude was up 39 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $73.99 a barrel by 0133 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was up 44 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $70.90 a barrel.
State-run OMCs revise the prices of petrol and diesel in India on a daily basis. They fix the price based on the price of crude oil in the international market along with foreign exchange rates. Any revision in the prices of petrol, diesel is applicable every day at 6 am. Additionally, the price of both the major fuels varies across states and cities in India, their fuel prices vary by location/region due to value added taxes, local and freight charges.
