Mithali Raj congratulates Indian U-19 women’s team on T20 World Cup win

The moment was special and it couldn’t have got any better as the words of appreciation came straight from the legend of the game, Mithali Raj.

Team led by Shafali Verma India Created history in South Africa by winning the first title of Under-19 Women’s T20 on Sunday World cup. The Haryana batsman made it to the list of Indian players including Virat Kohli, Mohammad Kaif, Prithvi Shaw among others who led the Indian U-19 team to World Cup triumph. However, she gets a special mention as she becomes the first cricketer to lead the Indian women’s team to win an ICC title.

The moment was special and it couldn’t have gone any better as the words of appreciation came straight from the legend of the sport. Former India captain Mithali Raj, who changed the face of Indian women’s cricket but could never win an ICC trophy, took to Twitter to congratulate the young Indian teen on a ‘monumental achievement’ against a strong English side.

“Congratulations #TeamIndia, this is a great achievement! This brilliant win shows how dominant you have been throughout the tournament. This win is even more special as it is the first ever Women’s #U19T20WorldCup. Enjoy every moment,” tweeted Mithali.

In another tweet, Mithali praised India head coach Nushin AL Khadeer for guiding a bunch of talented young girls to a resounding victory.

“So glad to see all the hard work put in by @NooshinKhadeer pay off in such a fabulous way! Mithali wrote, ‘Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to you for many more such successful campaigns in the future.’

The Indian women’s cricket team has never won the World Cup at any level. The seniors reached the final of the World Cup on three occasions across all formats, but failed to go the distance.

Mithali, who retired from international cricket as the leading scorer in women’s ODIs, holds the record of being the only woman cricketer to have appeared in six World Cups. He captained the team in 24 World Cup games, with 14 wins, 8 losses and one no result. Back in 2018, he led the Indian team to the final of the 50-over World Cup in England but lost to the hosts.
