Prayagraj: Remember to read the popular booklet ‘Train at a’ GlimpseTo get details of trains, their stops, fares, routes and other information whenever you need to plan a train journey? It will no longer be printed as the Railway Board has decided to go digital and offer the booklet in digital format. It will now be called ‘Digital at a Glance’.
Trains at a Glance, a handy book published annually by the Indian Railways, used to provide complete information about railways, including timings, routes, reservation process, rules and regulation of travel, passenger amenities available at trains and stations, catering, Menu and rates, rail-tourism information, fares etc. A must for frequent train commuters for decades, the booklet will now be available only in digital format.
Although this booklet has been in print since 1927, the Indian Railways published its first abbreviated train timetable under the name ‘Train at a Glance’ only in 1977. In 2020, the booklet was not printed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The time table of trains has been printed in the last 92 years except last year. Now a new online booklet named ‘Digital at a Glance’ will be available to the users across the country.
Railway Board, in a letter to the CMD of IRCTC, has given him the responsibility of preparing the digital version of the popular booklet. IRCTC, in turn, has sent a letter to all the zonal railways in the country, including the North Central Railway (NCR), informing about the board’s decision.
Trains at a Glance is broadcasting information about all trains in the country including Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Duronto, Garib Rath and Express trains. All the zonal railways have also been releasing the timetables of the trains being operated by them. Railway timetables issued at the zonal level mention small railway stations where passenger and memo trains stop. However, over the years it has been realized that the usefulness of these booklets has diminished significantly as people have started using the National Train Inquiry System and the 139 dial service.
Commenting on the issue, Dr Shivam Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer, NCR said, “The decision to remove the printed form of trains at a glance was taken by the Railway Board. IRCTC has written a letter to all the zonal railways of the country informing that now the digital format of the same booklet will be started.
