The teacher was forced to kneel before the students’ agitation in Assam, the government ordered an inquiry

A teacher was allegedly forced to kneel and apologize in front of students protesting the fee hike at Philobadi in Assam’s Tinsukia district, prompting the district administration to order a magisterial-level inquiry into it.

A video of a female teacher lying on the road with folded hands in front of the protesting students has gone viral on social media, which has been condemned by the opposition Congress.

A senior state leader All Assam Students’ Union, who was among the protesters, has been expelled from the organization for allegedly instigating the agitating students.

The incident took place when the students of Philobari Senior Secondary School were protesting against the alleged hike in fees. They demonstrated on October 11 and blocked the road leading to the school. School teachers tried to pacify the students and lift the blockade, leading to a scuffle between the two sides. It got to the point where one of the teachers was forced to apologize to the students for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the protest.

The district magistrate of Tinsukia on Thursday ordered the executive magistrate of Doomdoma revenue circle to inquire into the incident and submit a report within three days of the receipt of the order.

The order said that the investigation will find details of those who were involved in the incident or abetted it. It said Tinsukia inspectors of schools would assist in the investigation.

The AASU expelled its Tinsukia district unit vice-president from the organization for his alleged involvement in inciting the agitating students to kneel on the teacher and apologise. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee condemned the incident and said it was even more shocking as it happened in the presence of police personnel as can be seen in the video.

Teachers are revered all over the world and forcing a teacher who has been in the service of the school for 27 years to publicly kneel and apologise is a great act of utter disgrace which cannot be forgiven, said Bobita, chair of the media department of APCC Sharma said in a statement here on Friday.

Sharma said that while investigating the Assam government should also take action against those who actively or silently participated in this shameful humiliation of an Assam teacher. Representatives of AASU and the students who participated in the protest later visited the teacher’s residence and apologized for the incident.
