The Calcutta Municipality is going to bring new rules regarding the maintenance of municipal markets in the city. From now on the shopkeepers will have to bear the cost of maintenance of the market. Opposition groups called for a boycott of the assembly. Therefore, experts believe that such a decision is being taken. Incidentally, the Calcutta Municipality had already thought of this. This time we are going to decide to implement this rule.
According to municipal sources, many markets in the city need improvement. However, due to the financial crisis, it was not possible for the municipality to carry out such reforms. Initially, the municipality held a meeting regarding the maintenance expenses of the shopkeepers. Mayor of Market Department Amir Uddin Bobby participated in the meeting. Municipal Commissioner Binod Kumar, Marketing Officer Mukul Ranjan Barui and other dignitaries. Along with this, members of the market committee of all the markets were present in the meeting. At what rate do the shopkeepers have to pay? How to make the payment was discussed in the meeting. Initially, it was decided that shopkeepers would have to pay Rs 14 to 15 per square foot. However, no final decision has been taken yet. The final decision in this regard will be taken in the next meeting. The members of the market committee have been asked to take a decision on the matter after consultation among themselves. Aamir Uddin Bobby said, “The shopkeepers have been asked to pay the maintenance cost at a fixed rate. But shopkeepers can reduce it if they want. No final decision has been taken yet. The officials have been asked to announce their final decision in this regard.
Incidentally, in many cases a lot of money is required to operate because many markets do not have regular maintenance. According to municipal sources, Rs 1.5 crore is spent annually on regular maintenance of 48 markets in the city. This includes the cost of security guards, installation of bulbs, installation of tubes, washing the market, cleaning etc. In the hour of financial crisis of the municipality, if the shopkeepers bear the cost of maintenance of the market, then the officials of the municipality feel that this will save the municipality financially.
