Panaji: Saul the lake at Arrow In Bardez, with an area of ​​46,010 sqm, has been notified as the seventh of Goa wetland Under the 2017 Wetlands (Protection and Management) Rules of the Central Government. Lake It has been declared a wetland as it is critically important for its ecosystem services and biodiversity values ​​for local communities.
Once the lake is notified as a wetland, development activities within the wetland as well as its area of ​​influence will now be regulated. About 1.3 lakh sqm area will come under the sphere of influence of the Saulom wetland. Last month, public suggestions and objections were called and decided, which paved the way for the notification of Saul as a wetland.
“All pre-existing ownership rights and privileges relating to the identified and notified wetlands shall be retained. In addition, no pre-existing ownership rights or assets will be transferred to Goa State Wetlands Authority as a part of this notification. The status quo of the existing ownership of the notified property shall be maintained,” the notification said.
In November, Goa got its first six official wetlands under new norms from the central government. They were Zeldem Lake and Nanda Lake in Quepem, Toyyar Lake in Chimbel, Dashi Lake in Revora, Sarzora Lake and Kottambi Lake in Chinchinim.
Once an area is declared a wetland, any pollution or encroachment activities harmful to this ecosystem are prohibited in the area, including the establishment or expansion of any industry, disposal of any construction waste or management, solid waste dumping, discharge of untreated waste. , among others.
No construction of permanent nature will also be permitted except encroachment or boat jetties from the notified wetland areas.
However, any traditional fishing activities in the wetlands will be allowed to continue and water will be pumped from the wetlands for the use of the local people, if necessary. Plantation of any indigenous trees will also be permitted, provided they are suitable for the ecosystem.
Altogether thirty-five major water bodies have been identified in the state – with the help of the National Institute of Oceanography – that may qualify to be declared wetlands.
Apart from the seven reservoirs notified as wetlands so far, at least 13 other wetlands are in the final stages of being declared.
These include Bondavol Lake, Para Lake, Banastrim Lake, Wodale Tolem and Dhakte Tolem in Benaulim, Sapu Tolem and Mamolem Lake in Mormugao, and Kurka Lake and Canturlim, Malebhat and Gawli-Moula water bodies in Kurka.
