The rare ‘goat-headed Yogini’ statue returned to the country, what is the story behind it?

The Lokhri temple in Banda region of Uttar Pradesh had a tenth century idol of Chagmund Yogini. He was allegedly taken illegally. Then water started flowing in the Ganges. A lot of time has passed. However, the precious idol was not found. Meanwhile, the central government has taken steps to bring back various Indian artefacts that have just been rescued abroad. And this idol of the tenth century came back to the country with the help of the same initiative.

Behind the defense of the statue is the Indian Embassy in London. The statue of Yogini also comes into the house from the holistic efforts of India Pride Project, Art Recovery International, London. The statue was researched by Indian researcher Vidya Daheja at the National Museum in Delhi in 1986. This idol is mentioned in his book ‘Yogini Cult and Temples: Tantric Tradition’. Note that Yoginis are believed to have a special power called special meditation. According to the Tantriks, it is said that this is done by worship method. A group of them is worshipped. And the significance of this particular idol rescued from that direction is immense. The head of the Gogamand Yogini idol is in the shape of a goat. And the body is like a yogini. After the statue was retrieved, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy wrote in a tweet:

The statue was reportedly roaming the London market in 1986. The Indian Embassy in London will know about the statue in 2021. The Indian High Commission in London then tried to find a match between the lost Chagamund’s Yogini idol and the lost one from the Lokhri temple in Uttar Pradesh. The statue was later rescued from the garden of a London house. Earlier, the Indian Embassy there had recovered a statue of Brishnen Yogini from Paris. The idol is said to have been stolen from a temple in Lokhri village in Uttar Pradesh.
