Daughters do not have Phuleku

You can only imagine the scenario two decades ago. I was refused by my elders to take out the procession, and I half-heartedly agreed. But I had decided then, that my children would not have to suffer my fate.

People are very excited about this procession. Even today, if the procession of Dalits goes out on horse, then there is stone pelting in Ahmedabad. In such a situation, the procession is taken out under the protection of the police. The elephant was called from Ahmedabad. It was decorated colorfully. Two flexes were also installed on this elephant with the message ‘Educate the daughter, give rights to the daughter’. A picture of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was also taken on this to remind everyone that he spoke of equality for all of us, irrespective of gender or caste. Natu Parmar came into limelight when he staged a protest at the collector’s office with cow carcasses after the 2016 Una lynching incident.

Bharti, the eldest of the three siblings, is currently working as a staff nurse in Limdi General Hospital with a degree in Nursing and Midwife. Natu Parmar has two sons aged 19 and 21 who are pursuing a nursing course.

Fear not – we are all the same
Bharti’s in-laws also attended the event. Elephants require police permission. But no police protection was taken in this event. Parmar wants to give a message to his Dalit community that there is no need to be afraid of anyone. We are all equal and the law is there to protect us.
