The Kashmir Files re-release: Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s directorial debut The Kashmir Files gained massive popularity when it released in India in March last year. The film ended a drought at the ticket window and broke several box office records. starring Anupam KherPallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar and others, The Kashmir Files is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in the early 1990s and how it led to region-based killings.
While many called it a ‘propaganda’ film and claimed that it was polarizing, it managed to draw crowds to the theaters as it washed out many popular films that were released in direct competition with it. Now The Kashmir Files is once again releasing in theaters on January 19. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri announced that the film will be back in theaters on Kashmiri Hindu Genocide Day. He tweeted, “This is the first time a film is releasing twice in a year. If you missed watching it on the big screen, book your tickets now.”
Meanwhile, The Kashmir Files has made it to the Oscar shortlist. Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi and others have also shortlisted in the Best Actor category. The reminder list or shortlist includes films that may officially compete in various categories. But mere inclusion on the list does not guarantee that the film will advance to the final Academy Award nominations. Responding to this, Anupam Kher wrote on social media, “Very happy to see #TheKashmirFiles as a film and my name shortlisted for #Oscars2023 in #BestFilm and #BestActor category! As a shortlist It’s a big win for us too. Congratulations.” Also for other Indian films included in the list.”
