The board for the upcoming assembly elections in UP has been laid. Political parties this time are trying to woo women voters by covering everything in the promises which voters did not even think of. Parties are competing to leave each other behind by announcing new schemes and offers. In such a situation, it has been proved that the victory and defeat and voting pattern in the politics of UP depends not only on these three words ‘Caste-Religion-Region’… but on the strength of ‘half the population’. Why is this half of the population so important? To know this, it is necessary to understand the mood of the women voters of UP before the assembly elections.

Whoever got the support of women, the government formed by the same party
If we study the women’s votes in UP, it is found that since the 2007 assembly elections till now, the party on which women have reposed their trust, has tied the knot of victory on its head. Perhaps this is the reason that in this election almost all the parties are focusing more on women voters.

According to the data of the Center for Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), the figures collected on the basis of votes of women voters in all the assembly elections held since 2007 are very interesting. Meaning that whichever party was liked by the women till now, only that party got the command of power.

what do the figures say

  • In 2007, 32% women voted for the BSP, 26% for the SP, 16% for the BJP and 8% for the Congress. In 2007, Mayawati got the reins of power.
  • In the 2012 elections, 31% women voted for SP, 25% for BSP, 14% for BJP and 12% for Congress. Then Akhilesh Yadav became the CM of the state.
  • A record 41% women voted for the BJP in 2017. While 23% women voted for BSP, 20% for SP and only 5% for Congress.

Competition for half the population
It is clear from these figures that this time there is a fight for half the population in UP, but it will be interesting to see who will get the blessings of women voters. The country had also seen the power of women voters in the Bihar elections. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen saying that silent voters i.e. women are the reason for BJP’s victory in Bihar. This time too, women in UP are expected to vote well. Officers in different districts are also preparing accordingly. All kinds of campaigns are being run. All other officers including DM-SSP are touring from village to village.

It will be interesting to see who will get the blessings of women voters this time in UP.

Challenge to reach out to women
Let us tell you that in the political turmoil, a different atmosphere is going on in the state regarding women. Every party is trying to tell how much it cares for women. But due to all the guidelines of Kovid-19, candidates are able to contact women only by going door to door. Many women living in rural areas stay away from internet media. In such a situation, reaching out to them is not less than a challenge for everyone. Young voters will motivate the women of their families to cast their votes. Because of this, women voters can cast their votes somewhere in the confidence of young voters.

Women vote in large numbers
Women vote in larger numbers than men. In the 2012 Legislative Assembly elections, where 58.68% of men were able to reach the polling booth, 60.28% of women exercised their vote. This time with the increase in the number of women voters, they will hurt with the vote.

Many women living in rural areas stay away from internet media. To reach them is not less than a challenge for all the parties.

Will the gift competition change the mood of women voters?
So far, the bet of distributing things for free in the UP elections has not worked. However, political parties in other states have benefited from such announcements. Political experts believe that women voters of UP do not fall for populism. Free gifts may attract youth, but a conscious voter believes in growth rather than election promises.
