Thane Mayor Naresh Mhaske has accused the Municipal Corporation of keeping them in the dark over receiving the Centre’s Swachh Survekshan Award 2021.
The Mayor has written a strongly worded letter to Municipal Commissioner Vipin Sharma saying that he has come to know about the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) receiving the award through print media.
According to the awards announced last week, TMC ranked 14th in the ‘Waste Free Cities and Waste Management’ category.
In a letter shared with the media on Wednesday, he said, “The civil administration is insulting and sidelining the mayor and elected representatives.” He said that the administration did not even have the courtesy to inform about the award for which the general body would have appreciated the administration during the general body meeting.
“In other civic bodies, the mayor and other office-bearers were present to receive the award, but in the case of Thane, the civic authorities did not readily inform the mayor and other office bearers. Even the additional municipal commissioner-in-charge Waste management was not told about it,” Mhaske claimed.
He said the elected representatives in the TMC are completely upset over the non-compliance of protocol and “repeated insults” of the mayor, and added that they are planning a “non-cooperation movement”. He told the Municipal Corporation chief that the administration and elected representatives work like two wheels. “But this attitude of the administration is turning things sour,” he said.
The mayor asked the commissioner to conduct an inquiry into the matter and take action against those responsible for it.
