Thane: Thane Mayor Naresh Mhaske has claimed that he had received a call from a Union Minister asking him to stop the unauthorized construction going on by the Municipal Corporation.

This disclosure of Mhaske in the general meeting of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) caused a stir on Monday. Refusing to divulge the name of the Union minister, Mhaske said the drive against illegal hawkers and unauthorized construction would continue.

“A union minister had given a call to protect unauthorized constructions from the ongoing campaign,” Mhaske told the meeting. TMC’s assistant municipal commissioner Kalpita Pimple had narrowly escaped a deadly attack by a hawker during an anti-encroachment drive last month.

The incident caused a huge uproar among various political parties and demanded strict action against illegal hawkers.
