The Telangana government has made Telugu as a second language compulsory for students of schools affiliated to CBSE, ICSE, IB and other boards from the start of this academic year. A circular to this effect was recently issued by the school education The department, which comes as part of the state government’s implementation of the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Teaching of Telugu in Schools) Act 2018 in a phased manner from 2018-19.

As per the Act, Telugu was made compulsory from classes I to X, irrespective of the board to which the schools were affiliated. Violation of the rules to introduce Telugu as a compulsory subject from class IX from the academic year 2022-23 for all management and schools affiliated to various boards (CBSE, ICSE, IB and other boards) in the state of Telangana will be taken seriously And necessary action will be taken. Act and taken in accordance with the guidelines given by the Telangana State Government, stated the circular.

The department has prepared two Telugu textbooks, one for Telugu speaking students and the other for children whose mother tongue is not Telugu. The state government also cautioned that non-compliance of the rule will have a serious impact on the NOCs issued to those schools.
