The team want to go for a tried and tested formula which means a rank turner which will see the ball turning right from day 1.
Despite the Indian batters failing the spin test, resulting in their first Test series loss on home soil in the last 12 years, it is suggested that the Indian team management has asked the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for a ‘rank turner’ in the final Test against New Zealand.
According to a report by the Indian Express, the team want to go for a tried and tested formula which means a rank turner which will see the ball turning right from day 1.
“It will be rank turner pitch. The team management has requested to prepare a pitch which can help spinners from day 1. It seems the team wants to go on a tried and tested formula,” a source was quoted saying.
The Indian team struggled against the spin of Mitchell Santner who finished with 13 wickets in the second Test to ensure that India had suffered a series defeat. Several Indian batters had disappointing performances including the senior members of the side as well, which once again put the side’s woes against the slower bowlers under the spotlight.
Interestingly, the Wankhede, which has a red-soil pitch could see the ball having plenty of bounce as well which could prove to be a bigger challenge for the batters. However, this could also mean that the Indian spinners could be brought into the game even more and the side could hope that the bowlers come up with exceptional performances to help save the game yet again.
Additionally, the Indian side could also look to bring in some new faces into the side. The Delhi-based pacer, Harshit Rana has been included in the squad for the final Test and he could be brought into the side to possibly have some game-time under his belt prior to the Australian tour that follows.
Historically, the spinners have enjoyed success with Ravichandran Ashwin level with the legendary Anil Kumble with 38 wickets taken at the Wankhede. Another point to note was Ajaz Patel’s 10-wicket inning haul also came in the previous Test played at this venue as well.
The Indian side would look to redeem themselves with a win but also shut down any questions regarding their ability to play spin.
