Ranchi: Around half a dozen criminals thrashed an assistant professor of zoology identified as Matiur Rehman (40) on Doranda College campus on Thursday morning when he tried to stop them from misbehaving with girls. One person has been arrested in this connection.
The incident sparked protest from the college teachers who swarmed the local police station demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and adequate security measures on the college premises. The college principal, B P Verma, also visited the police station.
Rehman, who is also in-charge of intermediate section of the college, said, “While I was overseeing the intermediate classes in the morning, I spotted some outsiders staring at the girl students and making ugly gestures. When I asked them politely to go out of the campus, one of them abused me and others started hitting me with fist.”
Subsequently, other college teachers and staff intervened to save Rehman from the assailants. The victim who complained of getting hit on the head, face and the chest was sent by the police to the local hospital for medical examination.
Ranchi SSP Kishore Kaushal said that a case has been registered in connection with the incident and one accused named Taslim has been arrested. Raids are underway to nab the other accused, he added. The complaint has been lodged against Danish alias Mantu, Md Asif, Md Husnain, Md Sahid, Zia ul and others.
The college teachers said closed circuit television camera footage related to the incident has gone missing from the college premises. It is yet to be ascertained whether the footage is not available due to some technical reason or it has been removed.
While the process for filing the complaint was underway, a group of girls also came to the police station claiming that a few of the accused had misbehaved with them as well. The officer in-charge, Ramesh Kumar Singh, asked them to submit their applications.
