“Usha Didi from the Anganwadi center in Madantoosi village had died in Corona last year. So the department gave us an additional charge for her center. This has doubled the work pressure. Yogis will be very relaxed if they take out new recruitments. ” This is to say of Sudha Devi, Anganwadi worker of Aghora village of Rae Bareli. Sudha is currently handling 2 Anganwadi centres. He is responsible for the health of more than 120 people. This includes pregnant women, adolescent girls and children.

On the recruitments that Sudha is talking about, CM Yogi gave a big order on 19 April. Yogi holds a meeting with all departments regarding the 100-day agenda in UP. During this, in the presentation of the Health Department, Yogi gives orders to the officers on the recruitment of Anganwadi workers pending for many years. He says, “The recruitment process for 20 thousand posts of Anganwadi workers and assistants should be completed in the next 6 months. All Anganwadi workers should be given the benefit of Ayushman Bharat scheme.”

No recruitment since 2011, 50 thousand workers retired
UP Anganwadi Employees Union is an organization fighting for the posting of Anganwadi workers and their rights. Its president Veena Gupta told us, “There has been no recruitment for Anganwadi workers in UP since 2011. In the Mayawati government, a blueprint was prepared for their appointment at the DM level. But the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) opposed it. After this, the Supreme Court put a stay on this process. After this no recruitment has taken place till date.”

Veena further says, “After May 2020 in UP, more than 50 thousand Anganwadi workers have been retired. Due to this, many centers have become vacant. Now the workers have been given the responsibility of 2 to 3 centers to manage them. If the government makes these recruitments in a transparent manner at the earliest, then the pressure on the workers will be reduced.

Recruitment order came in 2021 but the matter did not work
This is from January 2021. The Health Department has issued an order to fill the posts of 50 thousand Anganwadi workers and helpers. Applications were invited from the people on the website of the department for the recruitment. But due to technical glitch, the column for uploading certificate was not available in the portal. Due to this the DMs of 15 districts raised their hands in front of the government. At present, there is no information about these recruitments on the government portal, so the recruitment has not been done yet.

ICDS came into action after Yogi’s order
Sunil Srivastava, DPO of Lucknow Division in Uttar Pradesh Child Development Services and Nutrition Department ie ICDS, says, “After the order of CM Yogi, the preparations of the department have started. Our target is that the process of these recruitments should be completed before 6 months. At present, a court order regarding recruitment is pending, as soon as we get permission, the recruitment process will start.

85 Anganwadi workers died while on duty during the Corona period
According to the UP Anganwadi Workers Union, 85 Anganwadi workers had died in the state while on duty in the Corona epidemic. The union had put a demand before the government after these deaths. There was a demand that the family members of the workers who died during Kovid duty should be given preference in the recruitment process. The second demand of the organization was that people from the families of the workers who have retired should be given jobs.
