Tamil Nadu urban local body polls: Nine AIADMK MLAs stage protest in Coimbatore | Coimbatore News – Times of India

COIMBATORE: Nine AIADMK MLAs, including former municipal administration minister SP Velumaniwas staging a sit-in protest at the Coimbatore district collectorate demanding that the district administration send Karur-based DMK members back to their home town and revoke fake cases registered against the party members. They also demanded that the district administration deploy paramilitary forces to ensure free and fair urban local body elections in Coimbatore district.
MLAs Velumani, AK Selvaraj, PRG Arun Kumar, Amman K ArjunanKR Jayaram, Amul Kandasamy, Pollachi V Jayaraman, Damodaran and Kandasamy and AIADMK spokesperson Kalayanasundaram, party advocate wing and IT wing members gathered at the district collectorate around 10.15 am. They sat on the portico of the main building and raised slogans against the district administration and police for foisting false cases against AIADMK cadres.
Velumani said that the ruling DMK had brought rowdies to Coimbatore from Karur and Chennai who were threatening the AIADMK candidates and people in Coimbatore. The DMK had been distributing gifts to the voters and police were supplying them in their vehicles, he alleged.
“The DMK violated the code of conduct across the district, and the DMK government is purposefully registering fake cases against AIADMK cadre. The state police are functioning as DMK cadre. Paramilitary forces should be deployed for election duty in Coimbatore district. We petitioned the district collector thrice to send out the rowdies from Coimbatore district. But no action was taken on the petitions. The DMK is attempting to disturb peace in Coimbatore and if the situation continues, the DMK won’t allow the people to exercise their franchise and will declare that the DMK won in all the seats in Coimbatore district,” said Velumani.
He also added that the district collector and the city police commissioner should be transferred immediately.
District collector GS Sameeran held talks with the protesters. The protesters told them that they would withdraw the protest only after the rowdies were sent back.
Later, the police removed the protesters from the collectorate premises.
