Tamil Nadu reports first death from Delta Plus Covid variant; Center Issues Advisor Advisor

Chennai: Tamil Nadu has recorded its first death due to the infection of a man from Madurai due to the delta plus version of Sars-Cov-2 (COVID-19), the state health department said.

State Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ma Subramaniam said on Saturday that a patient from Madurai has succumbed to the new virus.

“After the death of the patient from Madurai, samples were collected, which confirmed that it was the ‘Delta Plus’ variant,” he said. However, the patient’s contacts have tested negative.

According to the Union Health Ministry, 21 cases of Delta Plus variant were registered in Maharashtra on Friday. While 9 cases of the new variant have been confirmed in Tamil Nadu.

Following the rising number of cases, the Center has ordered the states to take immediate containment measures to contain the spread of this deadly virus.
