Tamil Nadu on Sunday announced complete lockdown for Covid surge

New Delhi: Amid the rise in the Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday announced a complete lockdown on Sunday.

News agency ANI told Stalin while announcing that there would be a complete lockdown in the entire state on January 23.

Only essential services will be allowed to function during the lockdown hours, which will start from 10 pm on Saturday and remain in force till 5 am on Monday.

In addition, restaurants and hotels can provide takeout services from 7 am to 10 pm during the lockdown

However, autos and taxis have been allowed at airports, bus stands and railway stations during the lockdown hours.

The move comes after Tamil Nadu had earlier recorded 28,561 new Covid-19 cases and 39 deaths on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu added 28,561 new infections on Thursday, taking the total number of Covid-19 cases in the state to 30,42,796.

According to the state health department, the death toll rose to 37,112 with 39 more deaths.

According to a medical bulletin, 28,26,479 people recovered in the last 24 hours, with 19,978 people being discharged, leading to 1,79,205 active infections, PTI reported.

Tamil Nadu capital Chennai, which had most of the fresh cases, had reported 8,007 cases on Thursday.

All the districts of the state reported over 100 Covid-19 cases on Thursday. Tamil Nadu’s 35 districts reported an increase in fresh cases compared to their earlier ones.

Earlier in the day, the Union Health Ministry said that more than 160 crore 43 lakh vaccine doses have been given so far under the nationwide vaccination campaign.

The ministry said that 2,51,777 people have been cured in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cured people to 3,60,58,806. The recovery rate is currently 93.50 percent.

India’s active caseload currently stands at 20,18,825, while the active cases stand at 5.23%.

The ministry said that a total of 9,692 omicron The cases have been detected so far, which is an increase of 4.36% from Thursday.

The Health Ministry said that more than 71 crore 15 lakh tests have been conducted so far, more than 19,35,912 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.
