Two government school teachers in Ariyalur district have made Tamil Nadu proud for classifying 18 meteorites, both of which have been awarded by NASA.

Kavita and Girija are working as teachers in Idayathankudi Panchayat Union Middle School and Karuppur Senathipati Panchayat Union Middle School respectively. Both were involved in a moving meteorite detection activity in July. The two teachers were part of a group of 23 teachers from Tamil Nadu who participated in a training session organized as part of the citizen science program in collaboration with NASA in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, NASA’s Hubble Telescope on the island of Haiti is capturing images of meteorites approaching Earth during the night and apparently sending them to scientists to study moving pictures, detect meteorites, and more. Teachers trained in this method examined photographs taken with the Hubble Telescope and found 40 different moving objects and submitted the thesis to the citizen science program. The research report of the teachers has been sent to NASA for further study.

Preliminary research has revealed the presence of 18 meteorites out of 40 identified objects. If they are examined and confirmed by NASA scientists, the moving meteorites will be named teachers. The couple, who presented research reports on meteorites, have also been awarded the certificate of ‘People’s Scientist’.

After this, the teachers said that they would regularly be given the opportunity to form a team of school students and search for meteorites with them so that the students could get involved in the project and develop their interest in science. The Ariyalur District Education Officer (DEO) personally felicitated two teachers for discovering the meteorites.

Speaking to News18, the duo said that recording such research has given rise to the idea of engaging in more space research, and thus we will learn about the impact of meteorites and their lifetimes. “We will take steps to involve students in such research in the near future,” both of them said in a proud tone.
