Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has increased the Dearness Allowance by 4%. The notification will be helpful for government employees including teachers, pensioners and family pensioners. Earlier the dearness allowance was 34%, which has now become 38% with immediate effect.

The increase in allowance will help around 16 lakh government employees. This decision has further increased the financial burden on the state government. There will be an additional annual expenditure of Rs 2,359 crore to the Government of Tamil Nadu.

In a program in Chennai, MK Stalin said that the government is ready to bear the extra burden for the welfare of the people. The decision comes against the backdrop when government teachers in the state were protesting for a hike in dearness allowance.

The protesting teachers were demanding equal pay for equal work. To work out the impasse, the Tamil Nadu government formed a three-member committee headed by Finance Secretary-Expenditure to draw up a roadmap for the dearness allowance hike.

The government decided to take the recommendation of the panel and thus increased the Dearness Allowance by 4%. The CM termed the hike as a New Year gift by the government to its citizens. Further, he appealed to the administration and staff to cooperate in the efforts of the government aimed at the welfare and prosperity of the people.

According to the report of the news website WION, the central government employees may get a hike in their salary at the beginning of the new year 2023. As per multiple reports, dearness allowance and dearness relief will be hiked by 3-5% in March 2023. Effective January 2023. This increase will result in an increase in Dearness Allowance by 4-3%.
