Tamil Nadu civic polls: DMK, AIADMK set to win in at least 88 panchayat wards

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu is set to emerge victorious in the local body elections in nine districts, for which polling was held in two phases on October 6 and 9. Meanwhile, the opposition AIADMK has suffered a setback in the form of counting of votes. In two phases of polling that began on Tuesday morning. As per the emerging trends, the main opposition party is trailing behind the ruling DMK in many places.

The DMK, who made an impressive start, is in a comfortable position and is on the verge of victory. Voting was held in 39 unions on 6 October, while the remaining 35 unions went to polls on 9 October in Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupathur, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts.

Elections were held to fill 27,003 posts, including 140 district panchayat ward members, 74 panchayat unions, 1,381 panchayat union ward members, 2,901 gram panchayat presidents and 22,581 gram panchayat ward councillors.

The DMK has been leading since morning when the counting of votes began and created a festive atmosphere at the party’s headquarters Anna Arivalayam.

The opposition AIADMK seemed to be a divided camp to take on the DMK alliance in the polls as its ally PMK decided to contest on its own from all nine districts and another ally, the BJP, contested alone in Kallakurichi district. . Out of 140 district panchayat wards, the DMK is ahead of the AIADMK in at least 88 seats while the opposition is leading in two seats.

DMK is leading on 331 and AIADMK 40 in Panchayat Union wards.
