Tamil Nadu: Chengalpattu Government Hospital releases the body of Kovid victim after 3 months

Chennai: Nearly three months after a woman died of Covid-19 infection, the Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital management on Tuesday called up her relatives to collect her body. In no time, the relatives staged a sit-in at the hospital and demanded an inquiry into the matter.

The deceased Alamelu was a resident of Kundrathur in Kancheepuram district. After being diagnosed with COVID-19 infection, he was admitted to the Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital on May 19 and died without treatment on May 22. Subsequently, the hospital management refused to hand over the body of the deceased as she died of Covid-19, despite several requests to hand over the body to relatives and assuring to perform the last rites on their own. As the hospital management remained strict on its decision, relatives stopped insisting on them and under the impression that the hospital management had cremated Alamelu’s body.

In this situation, one of the relatives got a telephone call from the hospital management asking them to collect Alamelu’s body from the hospital. Angered by this news, the relatives staged a sit-in in the room of the Residential Medical Officer (RMO) in the hospital. Chengalpattu city police officials alerted by the management reached the spot and pacified the protesters.

Meanwhile, the protesters also alleged that the hospital workers had demanded a bribe to release the body. After the hospital management assured action against the employees, the relatives left with the dead body. The hospital management has started investigation into the matter.
