Tamil film Koozhangal will represent India in the International Feature Film category at the Oscars

With great joy and pride to the people of the country, it is known that Koozhangal, the debut film of Tamil director PS Vinothraj, will be the Indian representative at the 94th Academy Awards. The film will compete in the International Feature Film category at the Oscars to be held in Los Angeles on March 27, 2022. The news was announced by Shaji N Karun, chairman of the selection committee. FFI general secretary Supran Sen said the decision was taken unanimously.

Earlier, the film earned the director the coveted Tiger Award at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam. The story of the film revolves around a real incident that happened in Vinothraj’s family.

Meanwhile, 14 films were shortlisted this year including Vidya Balan’s Lioness and Shoojit Sircar’s Sardar Udham starring Vicky Kaushal. Several regional films were also included in the list, such as the Yogi Babu-starrer Tamil film Mandela and Martin Prakat’s Malayalam film Nayattu.

These 14 films were watched by a jury of 15 members over a few days at Bijoli Cinema in Bhawanipore, Kolkata.

The 94th Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles, California in March 2022. Last year, Lijo Jose Pellissery’s critically acclaimed Malayalam film Jallikattu was India’s official entry at the Oscars, though it failed to make it to the Best International Feature Film shortlist. At the same time, Karishma Dev Dubey’s short film Bittu was nominated in the Best Live Action Short category at the Oscars.
