Talking to him was like, ‘remember the name’, explains Ian Bishop

Former West Indies cricketer-turned-commentator Ian Bishop recalled the story of how the word ‘remember the name’ came to his mind. Bishop’s remarks on the air became unforgettable after Carlos Brathwaite hit the fourth six of his innings to help West Indies clinch their second Men’s T20 World Cup title after beating England in the final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2016.

“That 2016 final call was not planned. The day before the final I went to a businessman’s function in Kolkata. We had to do a question-and-answer session. One of the questions was whether there were clear players in the West Indies squad for the final. Other than that there’s someone we should focus on. So, I dropped some players, Gayle, Badri etc. And I said, ‘Carlos Brathwaite’. He’s built like a house, he’s bowling well, that game Could be a changer. I never said, he will. I just said ‘he could’ and he is the one to watch,” Bishop said in a video posted by T20 World Cup Twitter handle on Thursday .

Brathwaite, till the 2016 final, was not much famous in the arena of international cricket. But he came into limelight when he slammed Ben Stokes for four sixes in the final over of the title decider. Recalling the way he did commentary on the last ball, Bishop said, “So, the West Indies team had gone through a lot. I felt like being around the team. A kind of fire was burning in them. When that moment came and Carlos did it because I thought they were behind the game and Carlos did what he did. That was just the passion.”

“I’ve always said that, I didn’t want that moment. David Lloyd was on the call lead. I didn’t want it. He handed it to me and I was scared when he did. Suddenly, I was in that position. I was just getting emotional. I subconsciously remembered something I said about Carlos the day before, when I told the businessman to look for this friend, and I was talking to him , ‘Remember the name’.”

West Indies will begin their title defense at the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup in the Super 12 stage against England in a rematch of the 2016 final in Dubai on 23 October. West Indies are placed in Group 1 of the Super 12 along with England, Australia, South Africa and the two teams from Round 1 of the tournament.
