Taliban kills several former Afghan officials, others: UN report

UN report says Taliban and its allies are believed to have killed several former Afghan officials

Washington:

A UN report seen by Reuters said the Taliban and its allies are believed to have killed several former Afghan officials, members of the security force, and those who died following the US-led pullout. Served with the International Military Force.

UN Security Council report by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres paints a picture of poor living conditions for Afghanistan’s 39 million people, despite the end of fighting with the Taliban takeover in August.

“A whole complex social and economic system is shutting down,” Guterres said.

The report appears to be the latest in a series of warnings issued by the UN chief in recent months about the humanitarian and economic crises that intensified after the Taliban moved the last US-led foreign troops to Kabul and international Donors had cut significant financial aid.

Guterres recommended that the Council approve the restructuring of the UN mission to deal with the situation, including the creation of a new human rights monitoring unit.

The report said the UN mission had “reported killings, forced disappearances and other violations” against former officers, members of the security force and those working for the US-led international troop, despite a general apology announced by the Taliban. Credible allegations keep pouring in”, the report said.

The mission has determined as credible reports that more than 100 of those people have been killed – more than two-thirds of them allegedly by the Taliban or their allies – since August 15, it said.

There are also credible allegations of extrajudicial killings of at least 50 people suspected of being related to the local branch of the Islamic State terrorist group, according to the report.

“Human rights defenders and media personnel continue to face attacks, threats, harassment, arbitrary arrests, abuses and killings,” it said.
