‘Take control of your nerves, set small goals’: Praveen Amre’s advice to battling Virat Kohli

Debate over Virat Kohli’s place in the playing XI for the upcoming T20Is World The Cup has gathered momentum in Australia as the batting maestro has repeatedly failed to make an impact in the game.

Many former players, including former India captain Kapil Dev, feel that the clock is ticking for Virat and his time is running out.

In the midst of the uproar over Virat’s form, the former India Cricketer Praveen Amre said the former captain should remain calm, control his nerves and focus on small targets to return to form. Amre, who has played 11 Tests and 37 ODIs for India, feels that Virat is just a good innings away from returning to form.

“Virat needs to remain calm. He should not overreact and control his nerves. He needs to spend more time on the wicket to score big runs. It’s just a matter of one good innings for Virat. For this he needs to chase down a small target… like focus on the first 10 runs, then score the next 10, and so on…,” Praveen Amre told Jagran TV.

“Remember Virat is a chasing master. He needs to help himself and stay calm. When you stay calm, your shot selection will improve, and you’ll be less likely to make mistakes. So I think Virat should be chasing a small target of 10 runs. I think it will help him a lot. No one doubts his ability, but he needs to stay calm and do things the right way.”

After a tremendous IPL 2022, Kohli continued on the tour of England with the bat in hand. In the rescheduled Fifth Test in Birmingham, he recorded scores of 11 and 20 in the innings. Later, in the T20I series, he scored only 12 runs (1 and 11) in two matches. He was ruled out of the first ODI due to a groin strain and remains on a dubious start to the second ODI as well.
