T20 World Cup: Debutante Namibia record memorable win

Abu Dhabi: Debutant Namibia pulled themselves out of a difficult position in a low-scoring game to register a memorable four-wicket win over Scotland in their opening Super 12 match at the ICC T20 World Cup here on Wednesday.

Namibia, which defeated Ireland and the Netherlands to qualify for the Super 12 stage, restricted Scotland to 109 for eight after left-arm pacer Ruben Trumpelmann hit three boundaries in the first over.

It should have been a straight forward chase but Scotland made it extremely difficult for Namibia on a slow pitch. The Scottish spin trio of Chris Greaves, Mark Watts and Michael Lesk were able to keep the pressure on the Namibian batsmen, but the experienced David Wiese (16 off 15) and JJ Smith (32 not out on 23) found a way to break the shackles. Wiese was dismissed as Namibia neared the finishing line, but Smit made sure his team crossed the finishing line with a six in the 20th over. Openers Craig Williams (23) and Michael van Lingen (18) made a quiet start to the chase and although the runs were difficult to score, the required run rate was never an issue. Scotland kept their heart open, but their batsmen could not score enough runs on the board, which led to their downfall.

Earlier, the 23-year-old Trumpelman got the ball to shape back into the right hand with the word go and the angle that went away also upset Scotland’s top-order.
