T20 World Cup: Bangladesh opt to bat in the shortest format first against England

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyadh won the toss and elected to bat against England in the Twenty20 World Cup on Wednesday.

Tigers, who lost their maiden Super 12 match to Sri Lanka, have made a change with the arrival of Shorful Islam for Mohammad Saifuddin, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury.

“The wicket is looking good, so we want to score well,” Mahmudullah said.

“We have three spinners, so we need to restrict them. It’s a new game, so we need to play well.”

England remain unchanged from beating their holders West Indies. A second win in Super 12 will strengthen their semi-final hopes.

Captain Eoin Morgan said his Indian Premier League (IPL) experience with Kolkata Knight Riders will be crucial in batting at the second position.

Morgan said, ‘We have been good in chasing the target, the wicket is looking good.

“We need to adapt. Traces of the past (England’s defeat against Bangladesh in the 2015 50-over World Cup that ruled them out of the tournament) inspire you for the future.”
