T20 World Cup 2021: Inaugural Champions in 2007, A Tale of So Near for India, Still So Far for India

The much-awaited ICC 2021 T20 World Cup is here and billions of fans are waiting for India’s first encounter with arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24. Since the inaugural tournament in 2007, India have been a side to be respected – be it their batting prowess. , clinical bowler or exceptional fielding. ICC T20 World Cup 2007

In an unforgettable inaugural tournament, MS Dhoni-led Team India won their first and only T20 World Cup by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the 2007 T20 World Cup final. Team India under ‘Captain Cool’ lost their first match in the Super 8 stage to New Zealand. But from there India reached the semi-finals and reached the final after defeating Australia. Facing Pakistan, India scored 157/5 thanks to Gautam Gambhir’s 75 and Rohit Sharma’s 30 off 16 balls. RP Singh and Irfan Pathan took three wickets each as India bundled out Pakistan for 152, winning their first T20 World Cup by winning the clash by 5 runs.

The defending champions entered the tournament under the strong mind and captaincy of Dhoni. However, it was a forgettable tournament for him. India started the tournament with a win, beating Afghanistan and South Africa in their first two matches, but the Dhoni-led side lost their matches against Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka, leaving them before the knockout rounds. England won the 2010 T20 World Cup.

ICC T20 World Cup 2012

India started the tournament by defeating Afghanistan and England in group matches and reached the Super 8. Although they suffered a crushing defeat against Australia, they kept their hopes alive and came back after defeating Pakistan. Later, in their clash against South Africa, India were unable to qualify for the knockouts despite winning the clash by 1 run, due to a Super 8 permutation. West Indies won the 2012 T20 World Cup by defeating Sri Lanka.

ICC T20 World Cup 2014

India was well prepared for the 2014 T20 World Cup held in Bangladesh. They defeated Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia and South Africa to make it to the final of the 2014 World Cup, where they faced neighboring Sri Lanka. But Team India could not work in the last hurdle of the tournament. Sri Lanka won the first T20 World Cup by defeating India by 6 wickets. Kohli emerged as the Player of the Tournament scoring 319 runs in 6 matches and the rest is history.

ICC T20 World Cup 2016

Hosting the 2016 T20 World Cup at home helped India. India started the tournament with a loss as the hosts lost to New Zealand, but from there they bounced back and made it to the semi-finals. However, the team had no answer as West Indies chased down 193 runs with ease to register a 7-wicket win. West Indies eventually entered script history and defeated England to win their second T20 World Cup title.
