Defending Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama hit a foul tee shot inside a spectator’s shirt in the second round of the US PGA Northern Trust tournament in suburban New York on Friday.
The 29-year-old Japanese star, who won the first major title by anyone from his homeland at the Augusta Nationals last April, hit a surprise shot on the 506-yard 10th hole at the Liberty Nationals in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Matsuyama saw the hook of his ball just above the target. The ball hit the path of a paved vehicle, took a high bounce and then entered the shirt of a male fan walking along the way.
The man stopped, not wanting to push the ball from where it fell. It wasn’t like it was in the pocket. The ball was between the clothes and his body.
“Walked between my legs, hit my knee and somehow got into my shirt,” the fan said as television cameras captured the unusual moment.
Matsuyama walked upstairs with a smile and studied the situation, taking out a tee and putting it on the man’s right shoe to mark the spot.
Then it felt comfortable to walk, the fan vibrated and the ball fell from its position trapped inside the shirt and rolled into the grass.
Matsuyama signed the ball for the fan, but bogeyed the hole and fired five consecutive birdies to eliminate the forward nine.
Matsuyama followed with three birdies, another bogey and a closing double bogey on the back nine – sending a bunker shot out of bounds to the right – to fire a three-under par 68 for the round and five after a 36 hole. To stand at under 137.
