Swapna Suresh’s lawyer sued for hurting religious sentiments

The Kerala Police on Saturday said they have registered a non-bailable case against an advocate of Swapna Suresh, accused in the gold smuggling case through diplomatic channels, for hurting religious sentiments through social media. The lawyer was facing the case on May 25 for a post on social media criticizing the dress of a government bus driver. That post insulted a particular religion, a complaint against the lawyer alleged.

“We have registered a case against a lawyer, Krishna Raj. The complaint said that the lawyer had falsely claimed that a KSRTC driver was wearing white clothes and was insulting a particular religion. We need to verify the identity of the lawyer,” a senior district police officer told PTI. Police said a case has been registered under various sections, including section 295A of the Indian Penal Code. This section deals with intentional and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.

A picture of the driver had gone viral and several right-wing social media handles, including BJP state president K Surendran, claimed that the driver was not wearing a uniform but a white robe. Which is a traditional Muslim dress. Later, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) clarified that the driver was wearing a sky-coloured shirt which is the uniform of his employees and that the picture looked like a robe due to the angle from which the picture was taken. .

Swapna Suresh, who met the media, claimed that a case was registered against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family following “recent revelations in gold smuggling case” by his lawyer. “Why didn’t they register a case when the Facebook post surfaced? Why are they doing this now? I cannot change lawyer again and again…,” said Suresh.

He questioned the timing of registration of the case a day after he released an audio-clip of his alleged conversation with a man who, according to him, is linked to powerful people in the government. He said he released the audio to “confirm” his claim that he had made a recent statement before a magistrate court on the alleged role of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family members in some alleged smuggling issues arising after his statement. Contacted them to “settle it”. activities.

In the purported audio-clip, a person named Shaj Kiran, a former media person, is heard asking Suresh why he made a statement under section 164 of CrPC before the court and said that the chief minister was targeting his family members in this regard. Will not tolerate his statements. With a certain smuggling case. “Kiran told me that Sarit will be arrested. occurred. He said Sarit would be released soon. That happened too. Kiran also said that my lawyer will be in trouble. Now a case has been registered against my lawyer.

She pleaded with the media, saying: “Don’t hurt those around me”. “Now that a case has been registered against my lawyer, will someone else come to my rescue? … I have already been labeled as a terrorist… I want to live…,” he said.

Triggering a political storm in the state, Suresh earlier this week claimed that he disclosed before the court – in his statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code – that others were allegedly involved in trafficking cases. and their “degree of involvement”. He said he has made statements against the chief minister, his family, former Kerala minister KT Jaleel and some other top bureaucrats. Suresh, a former employee of the UAE Consulate here, was detained by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) along with another accused Sandeep Nair from Bengaluru on July 11, 2020.

The NIA, Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Customs separately investigated the racket with the seizure of gold worth Rs 15 crore from the diplomatic baggage of the UAE Consulate at Thiruvananthapuram airport on July 5, 2020. Many people including M. Shivshankar, former principal secretary to the chief minister, and Sarit, another former employee of the UAE consulate here, were arrested in the case.
