Suzhal – The Vortex: An Indian storytelling ethos we should stick with, say Pushkar-Gayatri

It was in 2017 that a couple decided to write and direct the most complex, yet an intriguing thriller story ever. The description required absolute perfection in its execution. The final product which hit the big screen impressed the audience and critics alike and was immediately declared a hit. The film that brought Vijay Sethupathi and R Madhavan together on screen – Vikram Vedha – was one of the first films to make Pushkar-Gayatri a household name in the film industry. Fast forward to 2022, the duo are back with yet another intriguing story titled Sujal – The Vortex On amazon prime Video.

The series is directed by Bramma and Anuchan, and stars Kathir, Aishwarya Rajesh, Sriya Reddy and R Parthiban in the lead roles. Speaking about the 8-episode series, producer and writer Pushkar says, “It is an investigative thriller based on the disappearance of a girl. You have an idea of how a crime affects the fabric of a small town. There is a reaction to what has happened, and how it ripples through the people there. We wanted the big emotion, which you experience in theatre, to translate on the screen. Usually, web shows, people think of small enterprise, but this is not one of them. It has been installed on a large scale. We are releasing in over 30 languages and in 240 countries.”

He further added that they, as producers, look at it in a different way. “The way we define it is in terms of plot and heart. So, there is a plot that will draw you in, and then there are characters and character arcs, which will keep you emotionally invested in the series,” he clarifies. Ask him about the experience of writing the series, and Gayatri says, “Writing is not that easy for us. We are still struggling on how to write the features. So, when we caught on to that. So, we thought okay, let’s get into writing for a long time. So, it’s been very exciting and difficult at the same time.”

Gayatri revealed that the two initially started working on the script long back. “We started working on the story in 2014-2015. At that time we were thinking of it as a feature. So, as the story started to develop, we realized that it has legs, and it must be a long story. We can’t cover all the characters and arc in under two hours. At that time we did not have OTT platforms in India, so we thought that they will come one day, at that time we will do that. It took us a long time to write—about a year and a half. It’s also because we’re a little slow and lazy,” she laughs, as Pushkar explains that “it’s not ideal, we shouldn’t take that long! (laughs)”.

OTT has given viewers a plethora of options when it comes to content. And it has only made it even more difficult for a storyteller or writer to meet global standards. Acknowledging this fact and the challenge that comes with it, Pushkar says, “It is important to define what we are going to do. We attended film schools abroad. We came back India Having said that we will make films in our hometown itself. Our first three films, we didn’t even cross the border of Madras (Chennai). We strongly believe in an Indian form of storytelling. Somewhere, we must not copy the way another country tells its stories. There is an Indian storytelling ethos that we must live with. In trying to be universal, we should not be so homogeneous that our stories are the same as American, European, Korean, or Japanese stories.
