Kolkata: Taking a jibe at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s defeat at the hands of disciple-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram assembly constituency, West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday said it should now be given to someone else. Ghosh said that BJP will contest from Bhawanipur seat and will fight to win.

“The candidate will be announced by the parliamentary committee. Suvendu Adhikari has defeated Mamata Banerjee once, now someone else should be given a chance,” he said.

Ghosh said the BJP discussed the names of candidates for the upcoming by-polls to Bhabnipur seat and postponed elections to two assembly seats.

The way this government is working after the announcement of the by-election is not right, we will take up this issue with the Election Commission today.

Earlier on Sunday, the TMC announced Banerjee as its candidate for the Bhawanipur bypoll.

Banerjee has to win this by-election to retain her post.

TMC’s Sovandeb Chattopadhyay stepped down as the MLA of Bhabnipur, giving his party supremo a chance to become a member of the state assembly by contesting a by-election.

Banerjee is to become a member of the state legislature by November 5.

Bypolls will be held on September 30 along with elections to two seats in Murshidabad district, Samserganj and Jangipur, where voting could not go to the polls in eight phases earlier this year.

Counting of votes will take place on October 3.

The West Bengal BJP chief also hit out at the TMC government over the case against the officer.

“There was no case against Suvendu Babu when he was in TMC. After he joins BJP, a proceeding has been initiated… It seems that a conspiracy is being hatched to arrest him, so I think the court has ordered interim protection for him,” He said, ANI reported.

Earlier in the day, the TMC government moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the officer’s interim relief from arrest in the 2018 bodyguard death case.

In a relief to the officer, the Calcutta High Court on Monday said that no coercive action can be taken against him and he cannot be arrested in existing or future cases without his permission.

The High Court stayed the probe in three of the five cases registered against the officer after he left the TMC to join the BJP in December 2020.
