Suspected tiffin bomb kills 7-year-old in Bihar, second death in a week

Within a week, two people, including a seven-year-old child, were killed in a series of blasts in Bihar’s Bhagalpur area. The blasts have created tension in the communally sensitive area. No one has been arrested so far.

The children were playing at the Dargah Ghat on the Champa river and seeing a new tiffin box in a nearby garbage dump, seven-year-old Amrit Das picked it up. As soon as it was picked up, the box exploded.

The news agency Press Trust of India quoted Nathnagar inspector Mohammad Sajjad Hussain as saying that the boy was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The inspector said the bomb disposal squad was brought in to inspect any other abandoned tiffin boxes. Locals claimed that two live tiffin bombs were recovered from the spot.

On December 11, a waste picker was seriously injured while lifting a carton lying near the railway tracks, news agency Press Trust of India quoted Vinay Ram, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Railways as saying. Hearing the sound of the explosion, the Railway Police reached the spot and took the seriously injured person to the hospital where he died during treatment.

“The matter is being probed from all angles. Forensic experts have been pressed into service. Besides, dog squad and bomb disposal squad investigated the area where the blast took place,” PTI quoted him as saying.

On December 9, three children were injured when a crude bomb exploded in Momin Tola area.

There is an atmosphere of panic in the area due to serial bomb blasts. Bhagalpur City SP Swaran Prabhat said that they are probing the matter. He said that the police would also conduct door-to-door investigation in the area.
