Surat: At least two people were killed while five others are missing after a boat capsized at Amli Dam in Mandvi taluka of Surat district on Tuesday morning.
On coming to know about the incident, the villagers rescued three people and raised an alarm. All the dead were laborers who were going to get hay on the other side of the reservoir.
When this incident happened, about 10 laborers of Devgiri village were going in a boat to cut grass on the other side of the dam.
The fire brigade team retrieved the bodies of two elderly women. search for five missing Deputy Superintendent of Police Rupal Solanki said that the person is still on the run.
The victims belong to the local tribe and depend on fishing.
He said the rescue operation was going on till late in the night but the rescuers could not go beyond a certain level as the water level was close to 90 feet.
Villagers are allowed to fish in this dam by the government. Regularly, these locals first reach a small island in the middle of the dam in their boat and then catch fish using their nets.
“On Tuesday morning, when 10 locals, including four women, were on their way to the island, their boat capsized possibly due to bad weather and strong winds. The area where they sank is about 60 to 70 feet deep. Fire brigade teams from Bardoli, Surat and Mandvi are engaged in search and rescue operations,” Solanki said.
The deceased have been identified as Devani Vasava (63) and 2. Gimli Vasava (62). The missing are Mira Vasava (60), Shalu Vasava (55), Magan Vasava (60), Raiku Vasava (55) and Punia Vasava.
