The Supreme Court on Monday commenced its week-long Special Lok Adalat to facilitate amicable settlements of suitable pending cases. This comes as a part of the latest development in the row against one of the most prevalent problems of the Indian Judiciary.
The Lok Adalat is set to facilitate settlements of pending cases, including matrimonial, property, motor accident claims and labor disputes, ensuring efficient justice delivery.
It is one of the activities which the Supreme Court is organising in order to commemorate it’s 75 years of establishment.
As per the data available on the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), a total of 4,45,41,788 cases are pending in India, of which, 83,484 are pending before the Supreme Court while 5,997,994 cases are pending before various High Courts in the country while the remaining 3,84,60,310 are pending before the district courts in the country.
The first Lok Adalat court had the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, Manoj Misra, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Kapil Sibal and President of Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) Vipin Nair on the bench.
The court also saw Justices Sanjiv Khanna, KV Viswanathan with SCBA Vice President Rachna Srivastava and SCAORA Vice President Amit Sharma on the bench.
A total of 315 cases were listed before seven benches of the apex court. The seven benches, in a unique sight saw an amalgamation of bar and the bench.
