On Friday, the Supreme Court stated that the suicides in Kota were not related to the NEET-UG 2024 results. The court advised the petitioners seeking a CBI probe into alleged exam irregularities to avoid making emotional arguments.
The court made this remark when the vacation bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, objected to a petitioner’s lawyer claiming that students at Kota coaching centers were dying by suicide. The bench also confirmed that it will not halt the NEET counselling.
Justice Nath remarked that the suicides in Kota were not related to the NEET-UG 2024 results and told the counsel, “don’t make unnecessary emotional arguments here.”
The bench then issued a notice on the pleas for a CBI probe. The National Testing Agency (NTA) was given two weeks to respond, while other respondents (the Centre) were given time until July 8, the next hearing date.
The counsel urged for a CBI investigation into the alleged paper leak. Justice Nath noted that the NTA’s response was needed before making any decisions.
The counsel also emphasized that the petitioners sought other urgent reliefs, such as having the NTA provide details of the entire examination for every candidate before counselling starts in July.
“It’s the future of 24 lakh students,” he urged.
Justice Nath replied, “We understand that and are aware of the situation,” and added that all arguments would be addressed on July 8.
The court heard seven writ petitions in the NEET case today.
One petition, filed by two NEET-UG candidates, alleged manipulations at exam centers. The petitioners pointed out suspicions about students from states like Odisha, Karnataka, and Jharkhand choosing a specific center in Godhra, Gujarat.
