Supreme Court agrees to hear PIL on alleged hate speeches made in ‘Dharma Sansad’ in Haridwar

The Supreme Court on Monday (January 10, 2022) agreed to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking action on alleged hate speeches made during a recent ‘Dharma Sansad’ in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. . The event was reportedly organized by controversial self-styled godman Yeti Narasimhananda.

Narasimhanand, who is already facing several cases in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, is named in the FIR registered in connection with ‘Dharma Sansad’.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing in the PIL, mentioned the matter before a bench headed by CJI NV Ramana and said that the country’s slogan appears to have changed from ‘Satyamev Jayate’ to ‘Shastramev Jayate’.

“Well, we will take up the matter,” replied CJI Ramana.

The SIT is already investigating the matter. Two separate FIRs have been registered in connection with last month’s incident in which provocative speeches were allegedly made against Muslims, sparking outrage. Video footage of the incident has surfaced on social media.

Garhwal DIG KS Nagnyal had recently said that “appropriate action” will be taken if concrete evidence emerges after investigation.
