Superfood in winter: 5 traditional desi foods to stay warm and healthy this winter

Foods to stay healthy in winters: Our health and immunity can get affected as a result of the chill in the air which is getting worse every day. Cold also reduces our body’s ability to fight viruses and bacteria, which increases the risk of diseases like flu, COVID-19 and respiratory infections.

While most of us try to treat them with medicines or DIY remedies, it is important to nourish our body with proper nutrients to protect it from various winter problems. A combination of citrus fruits, protein-rich foods and various winter herbs and spices can help protect against ailments common during the season.

Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently took to Instagram to share a short list of foods that are traditionally eaten to help us transition from summers to winters and also help keep our immunity up.

1. Millet

These millets are an excellent source of proteins, carbohydrates and antioxidants. In India, this super-healthy grain is eaten during winters in many different forms, such as khichdi or bajra roti. Millet is high in fiber and minerals, and nutritionists say it can reduce joint pain.

2. Jaggery and ghee

Indian households often include both of these ingredients, and the combination is often enjoyed as a dessert after a meal. Jaggery and ghee apart from their delicious taste can also help in providing relief from sinus and warding off cold.

Rujuta recommends it for lunch and dinner as it goes great with bajra roti. In addition to this, a special dish that you can use to flavor your food is Masala Gur, which is specially made in winters.

3. Leather (horse gram)

In winter our skin becomes dry and hair becomes dry. Kulith, which keeps the skin and scalp hydrated and nourished, can be used to combat this. Dal can be consumed with rice and ghee and helps avoid kidney stones. In the states of Bihar and Himachal, where kulith dal is a staple dish during winters.

4. Safed Makhan (White Butter)

According to nutritionists, creamy handmade white makhan or butter promotes healthy digestion and ensures that we absorb important fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D.

5. Ko (Sesame seeds)

Consuming sesame seeds benefits bones and eyes, which is often used in bread, roti and other foods. By converting it into oil and then using it to season Gajak or Chikki, two dishes that are especially popular in winters, one that can easily be included in our diet.
